LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― Airlines say cockpit collision warning systems are being triggered more often on Long Beach Airport flights and the Federal Aviation Administration wants upgrades requiring more air traffic supervision.
The FAA’s proposed Class C airspace designation at Long Beach would increase by at least a third the air traffic control area around the airport. But some private pilots say expanding air traffic supervision could create more problems.
FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the proposal balances increased safety while limiting the impact on general aviation. A Class C designation would require two-way pilot-tower communications before aircraft enter the airspace and there would be strict separation requirements between aircraft.
